The Functions of Human Resource Management

The functions of Human Resources Management can be defined as a set of actions, activities, or processes that are involved in managing the workforce of a particular organization. The authority of an organization that is responsible in managing the workforce has a big responsibility to follow and fulfill the functions of HRM that are essential for the well-being of the workforce as well as the organization.

Starting from Job design & Analysis, the HRM functions can be listed down and described as follows:

Job Designing & Analysis

Job Designing & Analysis is the HRM function that involves structuring and organizing the job roles. In other words, it defines the job role, responsibilities, tasks, and the expected level of outcome of the job. It is the function that ensures the relevant jobs are clearly defined and aligned with the goals and objectives of the organization, and it also ensures that the jobs are defined as per the abilities and capabilities of the suitable employees who could do the job roles.

This is the initial function that comes under HRM.

Selection & Recruitment

This is the next HRM function that plays a crucial role in any organization. Under recruitment, the potential candidates are attracted and identified. Also, they are encouraged to apply for the relevant jobs. Finally, through selection, the highly capable and suitable candidates are chosen for the jobs and are being employed in the organization.

Recruitment can be done either internally from the organization itself or externally from outside of the organization.

For the selection, interviews, selection exams, and one-on-one meetings can be mentioned as the methods.

Induction

Induction is a kind of process that introduces the organization to the new employees. All the important aspects such, as organizational culture, policies, processes, job roles & descriptions, rules & regulations, etc. are taught to the new employees.

This is the function that helps the newcomers to adapt themselves with organization and enables them to perform well in the organization.

Induction gives the first impression to the new employees, and it is the function that plays a vital role in reducing the employee turnover.

Performance Evaluation

This is the HRM function that is assessing and measuring the job performance of hired employees. Under this function, the necessary recognition is given to the employees who have performed well, and rewards or compensation are given to them in order to motivate them to continue their performances.

This function enables the organization to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the workforce in terms of job performance. For the strategic decision-making, the outcome of performance evaluation can be used by the organization.

Performance evaluation acts as a strong factor that motivates the workforce to perform well in the organization.

Training and Development

Under training and development, the organization supports the employees to enhance their skills, understand their weak points, enable them in new areas of the job, improve their efficiency and, most importantly, develop their careers and make them mature in their job roles.

Training camps, providing operational guidelines, teamwork activities, training meetings, job rotations, and etc. can be defined as methods of training & development.

Training can be either on the job or off the job. Development is a kind of long-term process that shifts the workforce from the current level to a higher level.

Pay Management

This is a function that manages a crucial area of every organization. The main responsibility under this function is designing and managing salaries & wages, incentives, and other related benefits given to the employees.

The income earned from the job is the main factor that is considered by every employee in reality. When employees are satisfied with their earnings from the job, their desire to do their work improves, and finally the organization is well benefited by their efficiency.

Pay management is one of the main roles that comes under HRM functions.

Labor relations and Grievance handling

Grievance handling and maintaining healthy labor relationships are two of the very important functions that come under HRM.

Employees are human beings, the living resource of the organization. Hence, there can be many chances for grievance occurrences when people are working together due to obvious reasons related to the organization internally and externally. Hence, the HR department of every organization has to consider the grievances in a fair way and manage them well, bringing a fair solution for all the related parties, unless it heavily affects the well-being of the entire organization.

Labor relations is the function that manages the relationships among the workforce and the organization. The HR department should be highly concerned with creating a positive working environment for the employees while ensuring their relationships are also well maintained without any issues or unfair practices.

Health & Safety

The working environment and the entire organization should be very healthy and safe for all the workforce. If employees are being physically and mentally affected by the outcomes of their jobs, they will lose their interest in the job, and rather than risking themselves, they tend to find better workplaces and shift.

Finally, the employee turnover of the organization increases, and the organization fails in retaining talent.

Therefore, this function discusses the importance of ensuring the health and safety of employees as it decides the future of the organization.

So, these are some of the most important HRM functions that enable the organization to move forward on the path towards success. HRM functions play a vital role in every organization when achieving expected goals and objectives.
